Statement vs. minimalist earrings: the real guide to choosing

Statement earrings (large, with visible stone) and minimalist earrings (small, discreet) aren't just a matter of taste: there are practical factors that make one of the two styles work better for your day-to-day.

This is a styling convention, not a rule your face has to follow: if you're after more contrast, angular or elongated shapes can create a more elongated look on rounder faces; curves can visually soften more angular features. With a minimalist earring this effect barely applies: precisely because it's small, it doesn't compete or add visual volume near the jawline, which makes it the safer choice if you'd rather not think about this.

With hair down and medium-to-long, a statement earring can stay partially covered a good part of the time, though it depends on the earring's size, color, and volume, it doesn't disappear automatically. If you more often wear your hair up or short, the large earring shows all day more consistently.

A statement earring usually has more metal and stone than a minimalist one, which shows up as weight after several hours of wear, worth considering if your ears are sensitive or you're planning to wear it through a full workday.
